I'm struggling with bills or benefits

There may be more help available than you think — from benefits you're not claiming to grants and cheaper tariffs.

What to do right now

  1. 1Check you're getting all the benefits you're entitled to using a free benefits calculator.
  2. 2Contact your energy and water suppliers — tell them you're struggling and ask about payment plans or hardship support.
  3. 3Ask your council about Council Tax Reduction and any local welfare or hardship funds.
  4. 4Call us on 01872 859 515 if you need help working through it.

Help with bills

  • Energy suppliers must offer affordable payment plans and may have hardship funds or grants.
  • Water companies offer social tariffs that can lower bills for people on low incomes.
  • Your council may give extra help through local hardship or support funds.

Problems with benefits

  • If a benefit has been stopped or reduced, you can ask for a mandatory reconsideration — usually within one month.
  • If you're waiting for your first Universal Credit payment, you can ask for an advance.
  • Keep copies of all letters and notes of phone calls with the DWP.
