I'm struggling with debts

You're not alone, and it's never too late to get help. The sooner you talk to someone, the more options you'll have.

What to do right now

  1. 1Make a list of everyone you owe, how much, and any letters you've received.
  2. 2Deal with priority debts first — rent or mortgage, council tax, energy, magistrates' court fines and child maintenance.
  3. 3Don't take out new borrowing to pay existing debts.
  4. 4Call us on 01872 859 515 for free, confidential advice.

Priority and non-priority debts

  • Priority debts can lead to losing your home, having your energy cut off, or court action — so they come first.
  • Non-priority debts like credit cards, loans, catalogues and overdrafts are still important, but the consequences are less severe.

Options that may be available

  • Breathing Space — a 60-day pause on most interest, charges and enforcement action while you get advice.
  • Affordable payment plans agreed with your creditors.
  • Formal solutions such as a Debt Relief Order, IVA or bankruptcy, depending on your situation.
