I'm behind with rent or mortgage
Rent and mortgage arrears are priority debts. Acting quickly can help you keep your home.
What to do right now
- 1Contact your landlord or lender as soon as possible. Explain what's happened and offer what you can afford.
- 2Keep paying something, even if it's less than the full amount.
- 3Don't ignore letters about eviction or court hearings — and always go to any court hearing.
- 4Call us on 01872 859 515. If you've been told to leave your home, also call Shelter.
If you rent
- Your landlord must usually give you a valid notice and get a court order before they can evict you.
- Check whether you can get help with rent through Universal Credit or Housing Benefit.
- You may be able to apply to your council for a Discretionary Housing Payment.
If you have a mortgage
- Lenders must treat you fairly and consider options such as a payment holiday, reduced payments or extending the term.
- They should normally only take court action as a last resort.
- You may be able to get Support for Mortgage Interest if you receive certain benefits.
