What happens if you don't pay council tax?
At a glance
- Miss a payment and you get a reminder. Miss again and you can lose the right to pay monthly.
- The council can then get a liability order from the magistrates' court, adding costs.
- After that it can use bailiffs, take money from wages or benefits, or more.
- Bailiff fees start at £75 and rise by £235 at the enforcement stage — act early.
Stop it getting worse
- Contact the council as soon as you can and offer an affordable payment.
- Ask to spread payments over 12 months instead of 10.
- Check for Council Tax Reduction, the single person discount and other discounts.
Hardship help
- Many councils have a hardship fund that can reduce your bill.
- If you are vulnerable, ask the council not to pass your account to bailiffs.
Common questions
- Can I go to prison for not paying council tax?
- In England it is very rare and only for wilful refusal to pay. Getting help early avoids this.
- Is council tax a priority debt?
- Yes. It should be paid before credit cards and loans.
